Wits Open 2006 Results

Wits Plays It Grand

The Wits Table Tennis Open Tournament that was held on the 26 August 2006 under the auspices of GCTTA, attracted 46 players of all ages and playing strengths.

The tournament was a first in that it was run using the co-ed league format where men and women play against each other on equal terms. Some interesting results were achieved because of this format, with the likes of Danisha and Margie ending second and first in their respective groups. Both were only knocked out in the second round of the Top Tier knock-out schedule.

The tournament kicked off with the Doubles play. Here 16 pairs fought on a sudden-death basis for top spot. In the end, the pairing of Simon Dimant (GC) and Francis Obioha (GN) over-powered Alon Argaman (GC) and Paul Wernich (GC); 11/5, 10/12, 11/7, 10/12, 11/9. Bronze medals went to Aron & Sello from Sedibeng and Chris & Lloyd from Gauteng Central.

The Singles Tournament was conducted using a modified Sixes-and-three format across 6 tables. A mammoth task but one that was easily handled by the table administration team of Margie and Vivian. Filipe concentrated on tournament play as referee.

The eventual bottom-stage winner, Sello Posholi from Sedibeng, edged out Richard Powell from Eastern Gauteng in a hard fought 5 setter; 14/12, 9/11, 11/9, 8/11, 11/5.

Senior winner, Francis Obioha (GN) out-played Paul Wernich (GC) in an exciting match that was umpired by Neil and score-carded by Uwe; 11/7, 8/11, 11/5, 11/8. Bronze medals went to Uwe (GC) and Aron (Sedibeng.)

Congratulations to all who participated, assisted, helped-out and fed-the-masses, and specially to Wits TT Club for the initiative.
